Cairo Traffic Time-Window Calculator

Cairo traffic doesn't just fluctuate by hour — it fluctuates by zone pair, by Friday vs. Tuesday, by school season vs. summer, and by the day after a public holiday. This calculator reads those layers and tells you when to leave, when to wait, and how many minutes you save by shifting one hour.

What this solves

Generic travel guides say "avoid Cairo rush hour". That's true but useless — they don't tell you which routes, which days, and which hours actually compound.

How to read the result

The calculator returns a drive-time estimate, a congestion probability (0–100%), and a recommended departure window. Drive times are not promises — they are median estimates from taxi data and Cairo Traffic Department reporting. The congestion probability is the chance that your ride will be at least 50% slower than the median.

The shift savings card compares your selected time to the closest calmer window — typically 90 minutes earlier or 90 minutes later. On a Tuesday morning downtown → Giza trip at 8 AM, leaving at 6:30 AM saves roughly 25 minutes; leaving at 10 AM saves roughly 30 minutes.

The school-season toggle has the largest swing. October through May is when Maadi, Mohandessin, and Heliopolis cross-streets clog with school drop-off. June through August is calmer except near summer-camp traffic.

Limitations

FAQ

Is Friday morning really that bad?

Yes — and worse in Upper Egypt. Friday prayer at noon compresses a typical afternoon's traffic into 11 AM–1 PM. If you have a Friday flight, leave for the airport by 8:30 AM regardless of what the timetable says.

What's the actual fastest time to leave for the airport?

From Heliopolis: 3–4 AM is fastest (20 min). From Maadi: 4–5 AM (35 min). From Downtown: 4 AM (30 min). At 5 PM peak, any of those becomes 60–90 min. For 7 AM flights, leave the night before and stay at the airport hotel — far less stressful.

Does the calculator account for sandstorms (khamsin)?

No live data, but the calculator assumes an average day. During khamsin, multiply the estimate by 1.5–2x and assume more accidents on the ring road. If a khamsin is forecast, build an extra hour into your buffer.

Are microbuses really faster than cars?

Often yes — microbuses don't follow routes, drivers know shortcuts, and they squeeze through gaps cars can't. But they're cramped, hot, and refuse service to women alone after dark in some areas. For the budget traveler, a microbus can save 20–30 minutes on cross-city trips.

About this tool

What it is. A small JavaScript calculator that maps common Cairo zone pairs against hour-of-day, day-of-week, and school season to estimate drive time and suggest a calmer window.

Who it's for. Independent travelers booking their own taxis and transfers through Cairo. Not for those on package tours who travel in convoy.

What it isn't. Not a live traffic map. Not a substitute for checking Cairo traffic news on the day.

Limitations. Cairo traffic is famously volatile. The calculator is a planning aid, not a guarantee.
