Dahshur ?Bent vs Red Pyramid Decision

Dahshur is 40 km south of Giza, has fewer crowds than Giza, and contains the first "true" pyramid in Egypt. This tool tells you whether to go, which pyramid to enter, whether to combine it with Memphis, and how the math works in EGP and USD.

What this solves

Two questions most guides skip:

How to read the result

The planner returns one of three recommendations: do Dahshur, do Dahshur + Memphis, or swap to Saqqara. Each includes transport cost, time-on-site, and which pyramid to enter. The recommendations assume an October 2026 reference rate of ~50 EGP / USD and recent published ticket tiers; cross-check at the gate.

Bent Pyramid status. The Bent's exterior was under restoration through 2024?025. By October 2026 the close-up access face is back to visitors, but parts of the casing-block viewing area may be roped off. Verify at the ticket booth.

Red Pyramid interior. A long descending corridor (~60 m at low ceiling), then a chamber, then a climb back out. No colour, no reliefs ?it's a pure architecture experience. Skip if you're claustrophobic or short on fitness.

Limitations

FAQ

Is the Red Pyramid interior worth climbing?

If you have done the Great Pyramid and want a second pyramid-interior experience without the crowds, yes. If you have never done a pyramid interior, do the Great Pyramid first. The Red has no reliefs; it's an architectural visit, not an art visit.

Can I photograph the Bent from close up?

Yes ?there's a viewpoint 200 m from the base where you can use a wide lens to capture the angle. Photo permits apply if you bring a tripod or DSLR.

Memphis ?is it worth the stop?

If you have a half-day and like open-air sculpture gardens, yes. Memphis is mostly an outdoor museum with the fallen colossus of Ramesses II and a few smaller pieces. 60?0 min is enough.

Saqqara + Dahshur same day?

Possible but rushed. You'd need a 7 AM start, a private driver, and you'd skip the Serapeum. Most visitors are happier doing one or the other as a full half-day.

About this tool

What it is. A focused decision tool for the Dahshur-vs-Saqqara question and the Bent-vs-Red inside Dahshur. Inputs are your time, your fitness, your photo interest, your transport mode, and what else you want to do that day. Output is one of three recommendations with cost and time math.

Who it's for. Independent travellers in Cairo for 3-7 days deciding whether Dahshur earns the 80 km round trip. Useful for visitors trying to fit pyramids-and-Memphis into a single half-day.

What it isn't. Not a substitute for a licensed guide. Not a substitute for confirming the Bent Pyramid restoration status at the gate. Not a tour-booking service.

Limitations. Tour prices fluctuate wildly; the per-person estimates assume mid-range private tour operators. EGP rate is monthly ?refresh before paying.
