What this solves

Generic "Ramadan" travel guides give one rule for the whole Muslim world. Egypt is unique in three ways:

How to read the result

The planner returns the operating-hours shift per category by region. For sights, you get the new opening window. For restaurants, the date and what stays open (hotels, tourist-only restaurants). For cafes, the shisha situation. For shopping, the closing time. For cruises, no change.

Calendar overlay. The 2026 dates are 18 Feb – 19 Mar (subject to moon sighting). 2027 dates are 7 Feb – 8 Mar. Confirm with your hotel concierge 1–2 days before travel.

Regional patterns. Cairo, Luxor, Aswan are urban-Muslim: most shifted hours. Sinai (Sharm) is resort-heavy and barely changes. Red Sea coast is similar — package hotels run normal hours. The Western Desert oases are deeply traditional and the most shifted.

Limitations

FAQ

Can I eat in public during Ramadan?

It's technically legal in Egypt (the law is silent on tourists eating). Practically, avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in public spaces during daylight — it's disrespectful and you may be asked to stop. Eat inside your hotel, on the cruise, or behind a closed door.

Do shops close early?

Khan el-Khalili typically closes around 17:00 during Ramadan (vs 22:00 normally). Malls follow similar hours. Tour-only shops stay open. The 10 days before Eid al-Fitr see Khan el-Khalili close entirely in late afternoon.

Are bars and alcohol affected?

Hotel bars in Cairo and Sharm continue serving. Independent bars in tourist areas may close for the month. Wine shops may stop sales during the day. Red Sea coast is the least affected.

Should I avoid Ramadan?

Not necessarily. Many travellers prefer Ramadan for quieter sites and the iftar evenings. It does mean more planning around meals. For first-time visitors, non-Ramadan is easier.
