Your visit

Most Saqqara tombs charge a separate photo permit on top of entry.

Serapeum access is by separate ticket ?typically ~1,000 EGP, often pre-booked 48 h ahead.

What this solves

Saqqara has the densest concentration of separately-ticketed tombs in Egypt. The standard "complex ticket" (~440 EGP) covers only the Step Pyramid area and the open-air causeway of Unas. Everything else ?Mereruka, Ti, Idut, Serapeum, Ptahysues ?costs extra, often 100?,000 EGP. Most visitors either:

This tool ranks the tombs by your interest, shows the total EGP/USD cost, and tells you when the Serapeum booking hassle is ?and isn't ?worth the payoff.

How to read the result

Each tomb is scored 0?0 on four dimensions: relief quality, atmosphere, photo worth, and how much extra time it adds to your visit. The final ranking weights those against your chosen top interest. Cost is shown both in EGP and in USD at the rate stamped at the bottom of this page.

Why Mereruka often wins. It has 33 chambers (the largest private tomb at Saqqara), intact colour on many walls, and the reliefs are some of the best preserved in all of Egypt. The cost ?typically 100?50 EGP ?is cheap for what you get.

Why the Serapeum sometimes doesn't. The Serapeum is a half-day commitment by itself. If your time budget is 2? h, skip it ?your Saqqara day should be spent in the mastabas, not underground. If your budget is 6+ h and you booked it, it's the single most atmospheric thing on site.

Photo permits. The "photo interest" input affects the cost column ?DSLR/mirrorless adds ~150?00 EGP per tomb in photo permits. Phone tickets put the total back into the cheap zone.

Limitations

FAQ

Is the Serapeum really worth the booking hassle?

Yes ?but only if you have 3+ hours at Saqqara. The Serapeum is an underground network of 24 massive stone sarcophagi (one weighs 70 tons). It is dark, silent, and one of the most atmospheric places in Egypt. If your window is 2 hours, skip it; if it's half a day, it is the single best reason to come to Saqqara.

Mereruka or Ti ?which one?

If photography is the priority, pick Ti ?its reliefs are denser and the colour preservation is more complete. If you want one tomb that gives you a comprehensive picture of Old Kingdom daily life, pick Mereruka ?its 33 chambers cover everything from fishing to farming to court scenes.

Is the Unas pyramid interior free?

Yes ?entry is included in the standard complex ticket. The pyramid texts inside are short but historically the oldest religious texts in the pyramids. Worth 20 min if you have the time; skippable if your window is tight.

How do I book the Serapeum?

Email the Saqqara office (address on the official Ministry of Tourism site) with your passport scan, intended date, and group size. Expect a 24?2 hour reply. If no reply after 72 hours, call. Walk-ups are sometimes allowed in low season but you risk being turned away.

About this tool

What it is. A single-purpose decision tool for the Saqqara ticket maze. Tell it your time, your top interest, and your budget for extras; it returns the tombs to prioritise, total cost in EGP and USD, and an honest call on whether the Serapeum booking is worth doing.

Who it's for. Independent travellers going to Saqqara for the first or second time, deciding which mastabas and the Serapeum to spend extra on. Useful for visitors who want a single ranked list instead of reading 4 separate blog reviews.

What it isn't. Not a substitute for a licensed Egyptologist at the gate. Not a substitute for checking the day's open-tomb list at the ticket window. Not a substitute for the email-booking step that the Serapeum actually requires.

Limitations. Tomb closures and ticket tiers shift faster than the page can be updated. Treat the figures as a planning estimate ?confirm at the booth before paying.
