Pyramid Compass › Money & Practical
Three ways to stay connected in Egypt, each with a different cost profile and a different setup friction. The airport kiosk will sell you a tourist SIM at 2x the city rate — most travelers don't realize they walked past three cheaper options. This calculator ranks the options for your trip length and data needs, with total cost in EGP and USD.
Enter your trip details and run the calculator.
Generic travel blogs say "buy a SIM at the airport". They don't tell you that:
The tool ranks five options by total cost for your trip length and data use. The top-ranked option is highlighted. Prices are in EGP and USD at the rate stamped at the bottom of the page (~50 EGP/USD reference, October 2026).
eSIMs assume a modern phone (iPhone XS+ or Pixel 3+) with the eSIM already activated. Setup requires scanning a QR code from your email before or after arrival. Airalo Egypt 5GB is $16 USD for 30 days — the cheapest online option. Holafly has unlimited data plans at $30–$45 USD/day-bundle that work better for heavy users.
Physical SIMs require passport registration at the time of purchase. Vodafone and Orange have dedicated tourist counters in Cairo Airport; city branches register walk-ins in 10–15 min. Etisalat is the most permissive but the slowest to set up.
Almost never. Same product, 2x the price. The only exception: if you arrive late at night, the city branches are closed, and you need data immediately. In that case, pay the premium and stop at a city branch within 48 hours to swap or top up.
Etisalat has the most consistent 4G along the Nile between Luxor and Aswan. Vodafone works but has dead zones between Edfu and Kom Ombo. Orange is acceptable but no better than Vodafone. In Western Desert oases, Vodafone wins at Siwa and Bahariya; Etisalat wins at Dakhla and Kharga.
Yes — that's the eSIM's biggest advantage. Set the eSIM as data and your physical SIM (or your home eSIM on iPhone 13+) as voice/SMS. WhatsApp calls work over the Egypt eSIM data. If your home carrier charges roaming, disable data on the home line.
Yes — required by Egyptian law for all SIMs, including tourist SIMs. The vendor takes a passport photo and registers the SIM in your name. eSIMs sold online (Airalo, Holafly) skip this — they're prepaid data plans tied to the eSIM profile, not to your identity.

What it is. A small JavaScript calculator that ranks SIM, eSIM, and pocket WiFi options for an Egypt trip by total cost.
Who it's for. Independent travelers who need reliable data in Egypt without overpaying at the airport kiosk.
What it isn't. Not a live coverage check. Not a substitute for checking your phone's eSIM compatibility before you fly.
Limitations. Prices and coverage shift; the calculator uses October 2026 reference data.
