Pyramid Compass › Desert & Adventure
Siwa is the most remote oasis in Egypt, on the edge of the Great Sand Sea. The route depends on where you start (Cairo / Alexandria / Marsa Matrouh) and what you can spend. This planner ranks the options and prices them per person.
Marsa Matrouh is 4h from the coast; Siwa is 4h further inland. Cairo is 8–10h driving.
Run the planner to see the option.
Generic Egypt guides say "go to Siwa" but skip three Egypt-specific decision points:
The planner returns the best of four transport modes (bus, shared taxi, private driver, fly) for your departure city and group size. The "scenic stop" rule flags when a route passes through Marsa Matrouh or Alexandria coast — you can break the drive.
Cost math. Per-person cost for a private driver assumes vehicle split. Solo travellers effectively pay the whole car (about 5000–7000 EGP from Cairo). Two people is the optimal split. Six is the maximum van size.
Scenic stop rule. Cairo → Siwa via Alexandria is the slowest route but lets you break the drive in Alexandria and at Marsa Matrouh. Matrouh → Siwa is straight desert. The planner flags which scenic stops your option supports.
In theory yes, via small charter flights to Siwa airport. In practice the scheduled flights have been cancelled and restarted multiple times in the last 5 years. Treat the fly option as a research project, not a plan A. Cairo to Marsa Matrouh has scheduled EgyptAir flights, then drive to Siwa from Matrouh.
Cairo's Turgoman (for upper-class buses) or El-Marg / Go Bus / Super Jet (Go Bus has Siwa service since 2023, AC + overhead). Departure 21:00–22:00; arrival Siwa 06:00–07:00. Book 3–5 days in advance in winter season.
For the oasis itself, no. For historical sites inside Siwa (Temple of the Oracle / Temple of Amun, Mountain of the Dead tombs), you buy a ticket at the gate. Mountain of the Dead is open and free.
The Cairo-Alexandria-Marsa Matrouh-Siwa road is paved the full distance and has reasonable lighting at the coastal towns. Between Marsa Matrouh and Siwa you may have long unlit stretches. Private drivers leave at night to avoid daytime heat; bus travellers sleep through it. Solo private drivers in daylight are fine.

What it is. A small JavaScript route planner for Siwa Oasis that picks the best of four transport modes given your departure city, group size, and budget.
Who it's for. Independent travellers planning their own Siwa trip from Cairo, Alexandria, or Marsa Matrouh.
What it isn't. Not a substitute for current bus schedules or operator quotes. Not a substitute for checking khamsin conditions on the coastal road.
Limitations. Bus schedules shift seasonally. Marriages can be slow with fuel. The figures assume late-2026 EGP/USD near 50. Confirm with the bus operator or your driver the day-of.
