Tourist vs Local Price Decoder

The same papyrus scroll that costs 50 EGP at a Cairo stationary store costs 800 EGP in Khan el-Khalili. The same gold gram that's posted at international-spot + 5% at the CIB Gold shop costs 3x at the souq. This tool decodes the markup, gives you the local range and the tourist range, and tells you where you can verify the real price.

What this solves

Generic travel guides warn "you'll be quoted a tourist price" and stop there. The actual questions:

How to read the result

The decoder returns three prices: local reference (what an Egyptian pays at a fair shop), tourist range (what you'll be quoted in the souq), and your chosen location's median. A markup bar shows the tourist premium visually.

The where-to-verify line tells you the cheapest reputable place to confirm the real price. For gold, the answer is always a registered dealer with a Ministry of Supply assay stamp. For papyrus, the GEM gift shop. For dates, Carrefour.

The tip box highlights the most common scam pattern for that item category. Real papyrus vs. banana-leaf, real Egyptian perfume vs. French knockoff, real alabaster vs. painted resin — these distinctions matter more than the price.

Limitations

FAQ

How do I tell real papyrus from banana-leaf fake?

Real papyrus has visible cross-hatched fiber pattern (vertical + horizontal strips woven). Banana-leaf is smooth and printed. Real papyrus feels slightly textured and uneven; banana-leaf feels like glossy paper. The GEM gift shop sells only certified real papyrus at fixed prices.

Is Egyptian gold really cheaper?

Yes, but only at registered dealers with a Ministry of Supply stamp. Souq gold is sometimes under-karat. The premium over international spot is 5–8% at certified dealers (CIB Gold, Mohamed Ali Gold in City Stars); 20–50% in the souq. Always ask for the assay certificate.

Should I buy perfume at the airport?

No — airport perfume shops are 3–5x the city price. Real Egyptian perfume (jasmine, lotus, musk, amber) is sold at Khan el-Khalili but with a 200–500% markup; the same oil is sold in some downtown pharmacies at 1/4 the price. If you want a brand, buy at the airport duty-free for known brands only.

Are souvenirs at the hotel gift shop trustworthy?

Hotel shops are usually 2–3x the souq price but reliably authentic (especially at 4–5 star international chains). They're a poor-value but low-risk option. Best for last-minute, low-stakes purchases.
